Chapter Thirteen

They arrived back at the farm and Jace made sure to park his dad's truck in the same spot. He grabbed their bags out from behind the seat and headed up to the apartment.

Once inside, he set the bags on the floor in the living room before pulling Nathaniel into his arms. “I need to call Dr. Summers before it gets too late.” He placed a gentle kiss on his lips, before setting Nathaniel on the floor again.

"I think I'll take a walk and look at the animals, if that's okay with you. I can stay if you want me to."

"Go ahead. But don't get too close to any of them without me there. I don't want you to get hurt.” Jace looked down at Nathaniel's feet. “Maybe you should put on your new boots. That way you can start breaking them in."

Nathaniel dug his boots out of the sack, along with a new pair of socks, and changed his footwear. Once he was done, he stood and gave Jace another kiss before leaving him to make his call.

Heading toward the barn, Nathaniel stopped by the fence to watch the horses grazing in the field. He stood there leaning against the fence, enjoying the way the majestic creatures moved and frolicked with one another. He'd never seen a real horse before and they were a lot bigger than he had realized. He had to admit to himself that he was a bit nervous about being around the large animals.

He heard footsteps and turned to see who it was. He wasn't sure what was going to happen when he saw the frown on Grady's face. Hoping to stave off any trouble, Nathaniel gave Grady a welcoming look and hoped he didn't see the unease Nathaniel was trying to hide. He didn't speak, waiting instead to see what was on Grady's mind. He had a feeling he wouldn't speak until he was ready and Nathaniel had time to wait.

Grady stopped beside Nathaniel and rested his forearms on the top rung of the fence. He didn't look at Nathaniel, but kept his focus on the pasture. Nathaniel wasn't sure how long they stood there, but he jumped when Grady's deep voice finally broke the silence.

"So, you and Jace, huh?"

Keeping his voice calm, he answered. “Yes. Do you have an issue with that?"

Grady still didn't look at him. The silence stretched for so long Nathaniel wasn't sure he was going to answer. When he did, Nathaniel jumped once more.

"I guess not. I mean, I don't understand it, but I don't reckon I need to. Jace seems happy.” Grady shrugged, like that said it all. After a few more moments of silence, Grady shook his head and let out a deep chuckle. “I talked to Dad after breakfast and he told me what you did. I've seen some hardcore bikers cower in front of my dad, yet he said you didn't back down at all. Not only didn't you back down, but you put him in his place right quick.
